"Will it clog my pores?" is the number one question I'm asked about tallow. It's a fair one: tallow is a rich fat, and nobody wants to swap dry skin for breakouts.
Here's my honest answer as a pharmacist.
The quick answer: For most people with dry or normal skin, tallow doesn't clog pores. But if your skin is very oily or acne-prone, it may be too rich for you, so start slowly.
What does "comedogenic" mean?
A comedogenic ingredient is one that's likely to block pores and cause blackheads or whiteheads. Ingredients are often rated on a scale from 0 (very unlikely) to 5 (very likely). Tallow is commonly rated around 2, in the low-to-moderate range. For comparison, coconut oil is usually rated 4.
Why the scale doesn't tell the whole story
Comedogenic ratings come from testing ingredients on their own, often in large amounts. Real skincare is a blend, and real skin varies. How much you use, how often, and your own skin type matter just as much as the rating.
Why tallow often suits dry skin
Tallow is made up of fats similar to the ones your skin naturally produces. For dry skin that's short of those fats, this is why tallow tends to melt in and absorb rather than sit on top.
Who should be careful
- Very oily skin: Your skin already makes plenty of oil, and adding a rich fat can feel heavy.
- Acne-prone skin: Even low-rated ingredients can trigger breakouts in some people.
- Seborrheic dermatitis: Rich fats can make flaking worse. I explain why in my seborrheic dermatitis guide.
How to try tallow without clogging your pores
- Patch test first. Apply it to a small area of your jaw for a few nights.
- Use less than you think. A pea-sized amount is enough for your whole face.
- Apply it at night to start with.
- Focus on dry areas, such as cheeks, if you have combination skin.
- Cleanse properly each evening, so products don't build up.
If you notice new bumps or whiteheads after a week or two, stop using it on your face and use it on your body instead.
A lighter way to try tallow
Our Tallow Glow Whipped Cream is whipped for a lighter, airier texture than solid balm, so it's easier to apply thinly. It's handmade by me, a pharmacist, in small batches in the UK, with halal-sourced tallow and no fragrance.
